Films...

I like all sorts of films and will watch pretty much anything. My favourite at the moment, though I have hardly watched any films in the last few months, are Italian cinema films, as well as some other older classics. Here is a list:

All these - 'The Bird with the Crystal Plumage', 'Suspiria', and 'Profondo Rosso' - are written and directed by the same guy: Dario Argento. These are the only films of his that I have seen, but because of these films he is in my top three writers/directors (together with Billy Wilder and Mel Brooks). These films are very similar in plot, but yet so different. His directing is superb. And though I'm not a huge fan of horror films, especially these contemporary 'slasher' films, I like these horror films very much. While we're on the subject of horror films, a recent film I watched, 'The Orphanage' (a Mexican horror film), was great.

More Italians...

This still is from a film called La Dolce Vita. It's fantastic. 3hrs short in my view! It looks at episodes in a character's life. The still is from a hugely famous scene, so you may well know the film already. The writer/director is Federico Fellini, whose other film, 8 1/2, is great also - I haven't seen anything else by him.

I'm unable to bring to mind the writers/directors of these films. They are great. I think you would love both of them, especially, perhaps, Il Postino (The Postman). It's about a postman who delivers letters to the exiled Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (a great poet and worth looking up) - and Neruda helps the postman with poetry, which the postman uses to win his love. The guy who played the postman died shortly after the film was made (I think a street or square was named after him in Italy); his performance is amazing.

Billy Wilder...

I haven't seen all his films, but all that I have seen I have loved. Here is a list:

The Apartment (I think you would love this film)
Some Like It Hot (Probably my all-time favourite film)
Double Indemnity (a great film noir)
Sunset Boulevard (again, classic film noir, superb)
Seven Year Itch
Sabrina (I'm sure you've seen this as it stars Audrey)

Mel Brooks...

Well... what can I say? He just makes me laugh.

The French...

This is a list of some French films i've seen, and as you're a Francophile I thought you might be interested. The films with a * are ones I think you will love. The ( ) title is the English title.

What made you write this?

green tea and
a lemon & ginger bag
his life seems too
enviable yet surely
must be edged
in dark sorrow
is he happy?
are my jealousy pangs
worthwhile or
is he just as
frustrated with situations
as I?

Had we spoken recently? Had I visited? I don't think I had. Your last letter was from November '08 I think. How do you see me?

Wednesday 14 April 2010

so you know who it is...

Little flower shining bright
in the darkness of the night.

Little flower shining bright
who will see this precious sight?

I will see this this precious sight!
I will see it, hold it tight,

Little flower of the night,
I'll send it where one shines as bright.
